At the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting, President Joe Biden predicted that it would be “a sad, sad two years” if Republicans were to retake Congress in the forthcoming 2022 midterm elections.

“We need to bring some real determination, the same work ethic, the same enthusiasm. And if we do that, we’re going to keep the House and keep the Senate and add seats,” Biden told the audience of Democrats, cautioning: “And by the way, if we don’t do that — if we don’t do that, it’s going to be a sad, sad two years.”

“Think about Republicans if they had control of the Congress these last two years.” Biden announced that he thinks Democrats have “a record to be incredibly proud of; an agenda the public strongly supports if you look at the polling data; a message that resonates: Build a Better America.” He continued that Democrats have work to do.

“And I’ve seen what you can do. I saw it in 2020. Nothing was going to stop you then. We can’t let anything stop us now,” Biden pressed the party members. The Democratic Party has witnessed numerous House Democrats announce their retirement plans instead of seeking re-election ahead of the looming midterms, pointing to the potential for the GOP to regain the majority in 2022.

In the meantime, polling has shown a dramatic shift in party preference from Democrat to Republican at the end of 2021, as progressives lose popularity among voters. According to recent surveys, Biden himself has been slipping in the polls over the past year, with American voters expressing frustration with the White House’s handling of the embattled economy and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris rallied Democrats at their winter meeting and announced that the big task of the midterms is to remind voters that the Biden-Harris Administration largely delivered on their campaign promises.

“Our task is to show people that, in many ways, they got what they ordered,” Harris told the Democratic National Committee (DNC) meeting. Fresh off of her trip from Europe to address the Russia-Ukraine war, Harris said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attack on Ukraine threatens other democracies. “The ocean that separates us will not leave us untouched by this aggression,” Harris announced.

Reflecting on her meetings with allies in Europe, Harris stated their greatest power is unity and standing together in defense of democracy. She affirmed the U.S. commitment to Ukraine as it fends off a brutal Russian invasion. “The United States stands firmly with the Ukrainian people [and] in defense of the NATO Alliance,” Harris announced.
