Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told Politico on Monday that the retweet was “a fat finger mistake by one of our social media guys. He undid it immediately.”
The original tweet included a screenshot from an episode of Carlson’s Fox News show, and the tweet read, “Putin just wants to keep his western border secure.”

Carlson, a prime-time host on Fox News, has made headlines in recent weeks for his statements about Putin, who initiated an invasion of Ukraine last week.
Russian troops have sought to seize Kyiv, among other strategic cities. However, according to a senior Defense Department official who said they’re about 25 kilometers from the capital, they have met more resistance than expected. Fighting in Kyiv and other cities is ongoing, while neither side has established air superiority.

“What is this really about?” Carlson asked last week. “Why do I hate Putin so much? Has Putin ever called me a racist?”
“Has he threatened to get me fired for disagreeing with him?” he continued. “Has he shipped every middle-class job in my town to Russia? Did he manufacture a worldwide pandemic that wrecked my business and kept me indoors for two years? Is he teaching my children to embrace racial discrimination? Is he making Fentanyl? Is he trying to snuff out Christianity? Does he eat dogs?”

More recently, Carlson acknowledged that “what Russia has done is awful, but we can make it worse,” and he put “blame” on Putin.
“Tonight, it’s fair to note the obvious: The invasion of Ukraine is a humiliating defeat for Joe Biden. He’s our leader. He staked this country’s reputation, billions of dollars, and the full force of the U.S. government, on preventing Vladimir Putin from invading Ukraine. Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine anyway, and America is diminished by that,” he wrote on an op-ed for Fox News.
“It’s not the first time Joe Biden has done something like this. Biden oversaw an almost indescribably chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan less than six months ago. He left American citizens behind. He armed the Taliban with advanced weapons systems on the way out. It could not have been worse,” he continued.

He then maintained the idleness of Biden yet the strength of the U.S: “A venomous spider is weak, you can crush it, but you’re still afraid of it because it bites. We do not bite, and that’s the problem. We’re not simply weak. The United States government under Joe Biden is ridiculous. It’s pompous. It’s self-involved. It’s long-winded and fatuous. It’s not so different from the fading old man who leads it.”
