Pfizer/BioNtech's COVID-19 vaccine has shown to be effective against severe disease and death caused by the heavily-mutated Omicron variant yet less effective in stopping transmission.
With cases soaring, some nations have expanded COVID-19 vaccine booster programs or shortened the gap between shots as governments scramble to shore up protection.
In an interview with Israel's N12 News, Bourla was questioned whether he sees booster shots being administered every four to five months regularly.

"This will not be a good scenario. What I'm hoping (is) that we will have a vaccine that you will have to do once a year," Bourla explained.
"Once a year - it is easier to convince people to do it. It is easier for people to remember."

"So from a public health perspective, it is an ideal situation. We are looking to see if we can create a vaccine that covers Omicron and doesn't forget the other variants and that could be a solution," Bourla stated.

Mentioning three studies, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Friday that a third dose of an mRNA vaccine is key to combating Omicron, providing 90% protection against hospitalization.
On Monday, a preliminary study published by Israel's Sheba Medical Center discovered that a fourth shot increases antibodies to even higher levels than the third but was likely not enough to fend off Omicron. Nonetheless, Sheba said that a second booster was still advised for risk groups.

"My hope is that it's going to be within the next month or so and not much later than that, but I can't guarantee that," Fauci announced throughout an interview with Blue Star Families, a nonprofit group that supports military families. "I can't outguess the FDA. I'm going to have to leave that to them."

Fauci stated younger children will probably need three doses because two shots did not induce an adequate immune response in 2- to 4-year-olds in Pfizer's clinical trials.
“I did not at all mean to imply that the authorization would come within a month,” Fauci said in an emailed statement. “I meant that we do not know ... I am not involved in that decision.”
