During a conversation on Tuesday with J. Stephen Morrison, the Senior Vice President with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Fauci stressed that while the highly transmissible strain is everywhere, mainly unvaccinated people will feel the "brunt" of any severe illnesses.
"Omicron, with its extraordinary, unprecedented degree of efficiency of transmissibility, will ultimately find just about everybody," Fauci stated, according to CNN. "Those who have been vaccinated ... and boosted would get exposed. Some, maybe a lot of them, will get infected but will very likely, with some exceptions, do reasonably well in the sense of not having hospitalization and death."

The Omicron variant, the first cases of which were detected in South Africa in November, has become the dominant strain in the United States and many other regions across the world. Early data show that it is more transmissible than other variants yet causes less severe illness.
