Nearly 50 percent of Americans under the age of 50 who don't have children have chosen not to bring a baby into the world because the future appears too bleak, a survey stated, after the U.S. witnessed the biggest drop in births last year.

In a survey of nearly 4,000 adults, 44 percent of non-parents between the ages of 18 to 49 stated they simply do not want children - a seven percent rise from the 2018 results, the Pew Research Center found.

Once thought of as the natural progression of life - to have kids - is now changing as more and more adults are mentioning a number of reasons as to why they're skipping parenthood.

Over 50 percent of the non-parent/no-kid group cited that they "just don't want to have children" as their reasoning, while 43 percent mentioned other reasons, like medical and finances being the highest at 19 and 17 percent, respectively.

Nine percent cited the "state of the world" as too bleak for them to want children, and two percent answered that their partners didn't want any.

The probability of parents under 50 having more children in the future is grim, further, as 74 percent announced they would not have more children. Although, this number has barely changed since 2018, according to the Pew Research Center.

Those polled were not asked to reveal the number of children they currently have.

Parents, like non-parents, cited the most significant reason they wouldn't be having more kids was simply that they didn't want anymore, a lot like their counterparts.

Although, the group cited age as the second significant reason. Like non-parents, medical and financial reasons likewise ranked high at 23 and 14 percent, respectively.

Eleven percent likewise cited they already had a kid, and four percent did say the world was simply too bleak.

Notwithstanding the stereotype that every woman wants a house full of kids, the poll discovered that men and women were equally as likely to say they would presumably not have children.

The survey further discovered that those over the age of 40 who were non-parents were almost twice as likely to swear off children at 85 percent, compared to the 37 percent of those younger.

Furthermore, 91 percent of parents over the age of 40 further announced they would skip out on having another child, compared to 60 percent of those under 40.

According to the Census, the average U.S. household size is 2.53 people, as of 2020, which has declined by nearly 1 compared to 1960 at 3.33 people per household.

Bloomberg reported that U.S. fertility rates are further decreasing due to public health and economic disaster caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
