Within roughly 10 minutes of the polls closing in the big apple, the AP already called the vote for Democrat Eric Adams.

After eight years under extremely criticized Mayor Bill de Blasio, voters had to choose between two candidates with two very different visions on how to govern.

Eric Adams, the Democrat and a former police officer who is currently Brooklyn’s borough president against Curtis Sliwa, the Republican founder of the Guardian Angels, who has been a New York icon since the late ’70s but has never held office.

Eric Adams will be the city’s second Black mayor. Initially running on a relatively conservative platform for a Democrat candidate, Adams was forced to move slightly left to please the progressive core of the NY Democrat party.

Sliwa, a longtime NYC talk show radio host, has been a main figure in New York for quite some time, with some remembering him fondly from his great reputation as a crime fighter during the early days of his organization, the Guardian Angels. A real ‘New yorker’ as one might say, he is famously known for being shot by members of the ‘Gotti crime family’ during the ’80s.

During his campaign, he has pushed to be seen to draw a contrast from Adams, whom he has called an elitist.

“He’s from the streets, he knows the reality of what is going on,” said Nancy Aldrich, 59, a Queen’s local said.

The future mayor, Eric Adams, has a hard job in front of him after years of abuse by current mayor Bill DeBlasio. He will also be assigned the tough duty of leading New York City’s ongoing economic recovery from the ‘COVID-19 pandemic’, which forced many businesses to shut down for close to a year’s time.

As the economy reopens, businesses are attempting to navigate new challenges Deblasio has created such as vaccine mandates and an ongoing labor shortage.

New York’s Republican party now looks forward towards the 2022 midterms as they seek to use Biden’s recent failures in office for taking out some key longtime NY Democrats, such as Chuck Schumer and possibly AOC.
