A 16-year-old high school student was detained Thursday over a mask argument, forcing the school into lockdown for over an hour.

Grace Smith, a student at Laramie High School, was suspended from school for six days via three separate two-day suspensions. She insisted on an interview with Wyoming Sen. Anthony Bouchard about her arrest. She also supposedly received $1,000 in trespassing fines for refusing to leave school grounds.

"It makes me angry," Smith said. "It makes me feel unwanted by the school system. It makes me stressed out that I have to fight this battle as a 16-year-old. Right now, I should be playing sports and having fun. And instead, I'm fighting for the rights that were supposed to be won hundreds of years ago."

Bouchard shared his meeting with Smith and her father on Facebook and Twitter, praising her for "standing against Covid Tyranny ."

Bouchard also set up a Give Send Go account for those who wish to help Smith.

"You're what really everybody has to do, and I believe that," Bouchard said to Smith. "I've seen from the beginning of this, everything has been about following orders, it's all about compliance, but I don't really see a real direction we're going in other than making people fit into a mold."

Dr. Anthony Fauci on Sunday said COVID-19 cases would need to go “way down” before most vaccinated Americans can harmlessly gather publicly indoors without masks.

The White House chief medical adviser said the disease is still currently expanding too much in nearly the entire country to reverse that recommendation.

“It’s about 95,000 [cases nationwide per day] as the seven-day average. That’s still way too high,’ Fauci told CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked what the threshold would have to be to ease the CDC’s indoor-mask recommendation for even most vaccinated people.

“We want to get way, way down to … I mean, I like to see it well below 10,000 [cases per day] and even much lower than that,” he said.

“But when you’re at 95,000 [cases per day], that’s still a situation where you have a high degree of dynamic circulation of virus in the community.”

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently suggests that fully vaccinated Americans wear masks indoors if they’re in “an area of substantial or high transmission,” referring to the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant.
