Nikki Haley , the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Tuesday the GOP needs former President Donald Trump and that she would discuss with him before propelling a 2024 presidential bid.

The former governor of South Carolina will perform at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California , and called the 45th president a friend who serves an invaluable role in the GOP.

"He has a strong legacy from his administration," Haley said . "He has the ability to get strong people elected, and he has the ability to move the ball — and I hope that he continues to do that. We need him in the Republican Party. I don't want us to go back to the days before Trump."

Haley, 49, said in April that she would not run for president in 2024 if Trump did so. However, that view seemed "slightly less absolute" on Tuesday.

"In the beginning of 2023, should I decide that there's a place for me, should I decide that there's a reason to move, I would pick up the phone and meet with the president," she said, according to the Wall Street Journal. "I would talk to him and see what his plans are. I would tell him about my plans. We would work on it together."

Ms. Haley, 49 years old, is often cited as a potential national candidate in part because her biography as the daughter of Indian immigrants could provide a compelling narrative for a party that has fought to bring more support from nonwhites. She and Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota are the only women on early unofficial lists of potential 2024 GOP presidential candidates.

Like other possible 2024 presidential candidates, she is traveling the nation to help the GOP raise money and appearing with Republican candidates seeking to win back control of Congress in next year’s midterm elections.

Ms. Haley is also searching for funding for her own political-action committee and attempting to make new friends and allies that could be helpful, should she choose to start a White House effort. In June, she spent three days in Iowa, where the nominating process traditionally starts.

In her speech, Ms. Haley isn’t supposed to dwell much on Mr. Trump, someone who helped promote her position by appointing her to the U.N. post. Instead, she intends to argue that a move away from the nation’s core values and traditions is undermining it on the world stage.

“A large portion of our people are plagued by self-doubt or even by hatred of America,” she is expected to say, according to an advance copy of the speech shared with The Wall Street Journal. “It’s a pandemic much more damaging than any virus. Every day, more people think living in the land of the free is a curse, not a blessing.”
