In a significant political development, former President Donald Trump has endorsed Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs for the Republican nomination to succeed Senator Mitt Romney, who announced in September that he would not seek reelection in 2024.

Trump's endorsement of Staggs came on Saturday, and it was a clear snub to Utah Representative John Curtis, Staggs' primary Republican rival in the race.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump lauded Staggs as a "100% MAGA" candidate, ready to fill the seat of Romney, whom he referred to as a "Total Loser." Trump praised Staggs as a "Highly Successful Entrepreneur" and a competent Mayor of Riverton for the past six years. He expressed confidence in Staggs' ability to create jobs, curb inflation, stimulate economic growth, and secure the border.

Trump further highlighted Staggs' commitment to American energy, military veterans, and the Second Amendment. "Trent Staggs has my Complete and Total Endorsement – He will be a GREAT Senator, and never let you down!" Trump declared.

Unlike Curtis, Staggs has publicly endorsed Trump for the 2024 presidential race. He has described Trump as the "one candidate" capable of rectifying the "crippling" domestic and international policies of President Joe Biden. Staggs' campaign enjoys support from not only Trump but also prominent Republicans such as former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville, Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, and numerous other current and former elected officials.

In an earlier conversation with the Daily Caller News Foundation, Staggs emphasized his focus on domestic issues, such as the crisis at the southern border, before addressing international concerns like funding Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. "I think it's time we prioritize our own border over Ukraine's," Staggs stated, adding, "At $34 trillion in debt, we cannot continue being the world's piggy bank."

Current polling data is limited, but a poll conducted by Noble Predictive Insights from April 8 to 16 showed Curtis leading Staggs 27% to 5%. Other Republican contenders for Romney's seat include Brent Hatch at 11%, Brad Wilson at 10%, and Jason Walton at 2%, with approximately 40% of respondents "unsure."

Trump's endorsement of Staggs is noteworthy given his tumultuous relationship with Romney, who voted to impeach Trump in 2021. Trump rejoiced when Romney declared he would not seek reelection in 2024.

The Utah GOP convention is scheduled for Saturday, where delegates will decide their preferred candidate for the primary ballot in June, potentially choosing between Curtis and Staggs.
