Stanford University is grappling with an escalating situation as anti-Israel protesters establish an overnight encampment on campus.

Mirroring similar movements at universities nationwide, these students have set up camp in the White Plaza area of the campus to voice their opposition to Israel's military actions in the Gaza Strip.

The situation took a concerning turn when a photograph of an individual at the encampment, donning a green headband akin to those worn by Hamas fighters, surfaced on social media. The image, which also showed the person wearing glasses and a face covering, was brought to the attention of the university administration.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the university expressed its alarm over the photograph. "We have received many expressions of concern about a photo circulating on social media of an individual on White Plaza who appeared to be wearing a green headband similar to those worn by members of Hamas," the statement read. "We find this deeply disturbing, as Hamas is designated a terrorist organization by the United States government. We have not been able to identify the individual but have forwarded the photo to the FBI."

When approached by Fox News Digital for comment, a university spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. Fox News Digital has since reached out to the FBI for further information.

In a separate communication on Monday, Stanford President Richard Saller and Provost Jenny Martinez highlighted that the student encampment is in violation of university policies prohibiting overnight camping on campus. They revealed that the names of students found breaching these policies have been submitted to the Office of Community Standards (OCS) for disciplinary action.

The university's response has been met with criticism from the protest organizers. They took to social media to accuse Stanford of "actively discriminating against Palestinian, Arab, Muslim, and anti-Zionist Jewish students using their internal disciplinary process."

A letter penned by Jewish students on campus and signed by over 28,000 individuals urged Stanford to adopt a firmer stance against antisemitic behavior. The letter, dated Monday, called on the university to follow the example of institutions like Columbia University in removing the protesters.

"Other colleges across the country have begun arresting and disciplining malicious student and non-student agitators, setting an important precedent," the letter stated. "We, Jews and non-Jews alike, call on Stanford to follow suit."

The authors of the letter also referenced the photograph sent to the FBI, stating, "Individuals dressed openly as members of a terrorist organization is unacceptable and must be dealt with swiftly and harshly. Not doing so sets a dangerous standard, as no citizen should have to worry about distinguishing between individuals merely dressed as terrorists and true terrorists who seek to deal us serious bodily harm."

This situation at Stanford is not isolated. Other universities have experienced mass arrests and confrontations between anti-Israel and pro-Israel supporters. The University of California, Los Angeles, for instance, had to cancel classes on Wednesday following overnight clashes between protesters at opposing rallies.
