From The Bizarre To The Brilliant: The Most Unusual And Innovative Aircraft Designs Of All Time

McDonnell XF-85 Goblin

The McDonnell XF-85 Goblin was an American experimental jet fighter from 1948, but it may have been better suited as a guided cruise missile. It was designed to be dropped from the bomb bay of a Convair B-36 bomber, and its first-generation jet engine was supposed to start once in mid-air. In testing, this was successful most of the time. The idea behind the "parasite fighter" was to expand the range of fighter aircraft of that era. Unfortunately, the concept was abandoned within a year in favor of mid-air refueling, which was much cheaper and safer, though not as thrilling.
