Unmasking History’s Greatest Lies: Exploring the Shocking Myths and Misconceptions That Have Fooled Us All

George Washington Chopped Down A Cherry Tree

At times, beloved national heroes such as George Washington become the subject of stretched or fabricated stories. The tale of Washington and the cherry tree is one such story. According to the legend, a six-year-old George had axed his father's cherry tree, and when questioned, he promptly responded, "I cannot tell a lie, I did cut it with my hatchet." However, this account is entirely false, and it was invented by Mason Locke Weems, one of Washington's early biographers. Weems aimed to present Washington as an even more virtuous individual than he already was.
