Qahatika

As the camera lens of well-known ethnologist and historian Edward S. Curtis captures her gaze, the piercing eyes of a young Qahatika girl meet his. It is fascinating to note that the Qahatika people were once a part of the much larger Pima ancestral group, but they branched off after being bested by the Apache in a battle. Despite the harsh Arizona terrain, the Qahatika’s settled lifestyle helped them to develop an agricultural system based on dry farming. This unique farming method relied on winter rains to ensure a successful wheat crop throughout the summer, as the Qahatika were not nomadic people.
