Bizarre Historical Photos That Influenced America

“V-J Day in Times Square”

“V-J Day in Times Square,” Alfred Eisenstaedt’s photograph of a U.S. Navy sailor kissing a stranger in Times Square, is perhaps one of the most well-known photos celebrating the Allies’ victory of World War II. It gained immediate recognition after being published in Life magazine and has since been endlessly referenced in media. V-J Day, otherwise known as Victory over Japan Day, marked the formal end of World War II with Japan’s surrender. Eisenstaedt copyrighted the photo and carefully controlled its usage. A clearer photo (the one featured), taken by photographer Victor Jorgensen, was published in The New York Times and has no copyright.
