Bizarre Historical Photos That Influenced America

The Statue of Liberty Under Construction

The Statue of Liberty, as famous of an American icon as it is, was not sculpted in America, but rather in France. The French gifted the 305-foot tall statue as a symbol of ally-ship. The idea was conceived by French political activist Edouard de Laboulaye and was sculpted by another Frenchman, Auguste Bartholdi. The assembly of the Statue of Liberty occurred from 1881 to 1884, with the parts being imported to The United States. Lady Liberty’s pedestal, unlike the rest of the statue, was created in America. It is unclear in the black and white photo, but The Statue of Liberty was initially penny-colored but rusted over time, leaving it with its famous green tint.
