As the seventeenth President, Andrew Johnson took over after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Johnson also is among the Presidents impeached by Congress. He came from a poor family, so he could not attend school. He learned a trade as a tailor. His work paid off when he moved to Tennessee and met Eliza McCardle, who married him. She helped him learn math and improved his reading and writing skills. One month after Lincoln’s inauguration, Johnson became President following Lincoln’s assassination. His Southern attitude clashed with Congress, and Johnson began vetoing bills. He vetoed so many bills that he became known as “The Veto President.” Eventually, Congress voted to impeach him. However, the Senate voted for him to continue as President. He memorized much of the Constitution. When he died, they wrapped his body in the American flag with a copy of the Constitution under his head.
