Dwight D. Eisenhower served as the thirty-fourth President of the United States for two terms. During his leadership, the nation experienced relative peace and economic prosperity. His birth name was David. However, he went by his middle name and later permanently switched the two names. While growing up with five brothers, the boys nicknamed each other “Ike,” and the name played a role in Eisenhower’s campaign. The phrase “We like Ike” rolled off the tongue and interested voters. He loved reading books about military history and attended West Point. He gained success in the army, gaining the rank of five-star general. Eisenhower attempted to stop the spread of communism with the Eisenhower Doctrine. He thought of racism as a national security issue. He established the Interstate Highway System. Eisenhower also proposed the Civil Rights Acts of 1957 and 1960 and helped negotiate an end to the Korean War.
