The Israeli government confirmed on Thursday the death of Dror Or, a 49-year-old father of three who was among the hostages held in Gaza.

Or was killed during the October 7 Hamas attack in Kibbutz Be’eri, a tragic event that also claimed the lives of approximately 1,200 others, including 33 Americans.

The government's announcement read, “We are heartbroken to share that Dror Or who was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, had been confirmed as murdered and his body is being held in Gaza.” The means by which the government obtained this information remains undisclosed.

Or was one of an estimated 250 individuals abducted during the Hamas attack. His wife, Yonat, is believed to have been fatally shot while attempting to seek refuge from the onslaught on the same day.

In a twist of fate, two of the couple's children, Noam, 17, and Alma, 13, were also abducted but were later released in November as part of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. With the confirmation of Or's death, the teenage siblings, along with their brother Yahli, are now orphans.

Upon their release, the siblings' joy was abruptly "shattered" upon learning of their mother's death at the hands of the terror group. Their uncle, Ahal Besorai, told CNN in November, “My sister, their mom, was murdered on October 7. The children did not know that. We thought they were together when they were kidnapped, but they were separated from the outset.”

Hamas, the governing body of the Gaza Strip, is recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States and numerous Western nations. United Nations experts have concluded that Hamas terrorists committed gang rape and other acts of sexual violence during the attack.

As of now, Israel estimates that 129 captives, including 35 who are deceased like Or, remain in Gaza. The Israeli government continues to grapple with the aftermath of the October 7 attack, a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict and its devastating human toll.
