A father of a student in the Northern Virginia district accused Ziegler at a school board meeting of covering up the sexual assault of his daughter. The assault involved a biological male who wore a skirt raping his daughter in one of the bathrooms in the school. The suspect was transferred to another school, where he allegedly assaulted another girl. The suspect is facing charges in both cases.
The father alleges that the school covered up the sexual assaults to advance its transgender policies and to avoid rocking the boat. The transgender policy of the LCPS school board has been the subject of protests by parents in the district.

"stunning lack of openness, transparency and accountability, both to the public and to the special grand jury"
The board also condemned Ziegler for claiming not to have any knowledge of the first sexual assault committed by the suspect. Ziegler declined that he knew anything about that assault at a June 2021 school board meeting, even though the assault took place in May 2021. The second alleged assault occurred in October 2021.

The grand jury report stated that the school district failed to step in and take proper actions to amend the situation. It said that the grand jury did not find a coordinated effort between the school board and the school district to cover anything up, but it did find that other actions could have been taken that could have prevented the assault from happening in the first place.
