In balloting performed by the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Tuesday, Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was the lone player to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The shock was the exclusion of Curt Schilling, a Trump supporter and one of the best clutch pitchers to play the game

In his first season on the ballot, Ortiz received 77.9% of the vote. That was slightly higher than the required 75 percent for Cooperstown induction.

With the Boston Red Sox, Ortiz was a 10-time All-Star. In 20 seasons with the Minnesota Twins (1997-2002) and Boston Red Sox, he hit 541 home runs and drove in 1,768 runs (2003-16).

With the Red Sox, "Big Papi" won three World Series victories as a first baseman and designated hitter. In their 10th and last seasons, outfielder Barry Bonds and right-hander Roger Clemens both came up short on the writers' votes. Bonds garnered 66% of the vote, while Clemens received 65.2 percent.

Both Clemens and Bonds' candidacies have been marred by allegations that they utilized illicit performance-enhancing substances during their careers.

Bonds is the all-time home run leader in baseball with 762 home runs and a record seven NL MVP trophies in his 22-year career (1986-2007). From 1986 through 1992, he was a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Francisco Giants (1993-2007).

From 1984 to 2007, Clemens won a record seven Cy Young Awards, going 354-184 with a 3.12 ERA, 4,672 strikeouts, and 46 shutouts in 24 seasons. From 1984 through 1996, he pitched for the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays (1997-1998), New York Yankees (1999-2003, 2007), and Houston Astros (2004-06).

Meanwhile, in his first year on the ballot, infielder Alex Rodriguez garnered 34.3 percent of the vote. Rodriguez was suspended for the entire 2014 season after breaching the Major League Baseball rules on performance-enhancing drugs.

Rodriguez has 696 home runs and 2,086 RBI in 22 seasons in the major leagues, from 1994 to 2016. He was a 14-time All-Star and three-time MVP. On his last ballot, infielder Scott Rolen received 63.2 percent of the vote, while right-hander Curt Schilling received 58.6 percent. Schilling's vote share has decreased from 2021, when he received 71.1 percent of the vote. He requested that his name be removed from the ballot after coming up short last year, but the BBWAA rejected.

Schilling was a six-time All-Star who pitched for the Baltimore Orioles (1988-90), Houston Astros (1991), Philadelphia Phillies (1992-2000), Arizona Diamondbacks (2000-03), and Boston Red Sox from 1988 to 2007. He went 216-146 with a 3.46 ERA, 3,116 strikeouts, 83 complete games, and 20 shutouts in 20 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles (1988-90), Houston Astros (1991), Philadelphia Phillies (1992 (2004-07). In 3,261 innings, he only walked 711 batters.

He was the NL Cy Young Award runner-up twice (2001-02) and placed second in the AL Cy Young Award in 2004. In each of those three seasons, Schilling won more than 20 games, including a career-high 23 with the Diamondbacks in 2002.

Schilling had a strong playoff, going 11-2 with a 2.23 ERA and two shutouts in 19 appearances. In 2001, he shared World Series MVP honors with Randy Johnson as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the New York Yankees in seven games. With the Red Sox, he was also a member of two championship teams (2004, 2007).

On July 24, Ortiz will join six other players inducted into Cooperstown by various committees: Negro League legend Buck O'Neil, Chicago White Sox legend Minnie Minoso, former Minnesota Twins teammates Tony Oliva and Jim Kaat, former Brooklyn Dodgers slugger and New York Mets manager Gil Hodges, and Black player Bud Fowler.
