In a bold move that has sparked controversy, San Diego's Sheriff, Kelly Martinez, has pledged to resist a newly implemented policy that restricts collaboration with federal immigration authorities.

This comes after the San Diego County supervisors voted to ban the sheriff's department from assisting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in enforcing immigration laws, including those permitting deportations. This decision aligns with California law, which discourages cooperation but allows exceptions for individuals convicted of certain violent crimes.

According to The Post Millennial, Sheriff Martinez, who is nonpartisan but has identified as a Democrat, has openly declared that her office will not adhere to the new policy. She asserts that the board does not dictate her office's policy. This stricter stance in San Diego mirrors that of seven other counties in California, including Los Angeles, where policies surpass state law.

In a statement, Martinez said, “Current state law strikes the right balance between limiting local law enforcement's cooperation with immigration authorities, ensuring public safety, and building community trust.”

The enforcement of mass deportations of illegal immigrants, as promised by President-elect Donald Trump and his incoming border czar Tom Homan, may prove challenging due to ICE's limited resources. This is particularly true in San Diego County, home to 3.3 million residents and located near the U.S. border with Mexico. ICE will likely need to rely heavily on local law enforcement.

Tom Homan, Trump's border czar, has previously identified San Diego as a potential obstacle to the deportation plans due to its "sanctuary" laws. These laws limit the extent to which state and local governments can cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Homan told Fox News that laws denying ICE access to county jails “put the community at risk.”

Jim Desmond, the sole supervisor who opposed the new policy, argued that it would protect violent criminals. He cited the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Kate Steinle in San Francisco in 2015 and other high-profile attacks committed by illegal immigrants as evidence. Desmond stated, “These tragedies are preventable but sanctuary laws allow them to happen by allowing illegal criminals back into our communities instead of into the hands of ICE.” He further expressed his outrage at the decision to transform San Diego county into a 'super' sanctuary city, calling it an affront to every law-abiding citizen who values safety and justice.
