New York Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a key proponent of the much-debated "Green New Deal," has raised concerns that former President Donald Trump could potentially enable oil corporations to exploit consumers with inflated gasoline prices.

During her recent appearance on Spectrum News NY1, a New York-centric news channel, Ocasio-Cortez insinuated that Trump might permit energy corporations to conspire to hike prices at gas stations if he emerges victorious in the 2024 presidential race. As a co-author of the extensive "Green New Deal," Ocasio-Cortez is a prominent champion for a government-led transition away from fossil fuels in the U.S. economy. Critics, however, have persistently argued that such a move would inevitably escalate energy expenses for American citizens over time.

Pat Kiernan, the host of the show, questioned Ocasio-Cortez about Trump's scheduled rally in the Bronx, asking, "As you consider the message that Trump might deliver, will he find some New Yorkers receptive to that? How much of this crowd do you think is an out-of-town crowd versus a Bronx crowd?"

In response, Ocasio-Cortez stated, "I mean, I suspect there’s gonna be a lot of out-of-towners there, and listen, we have a big diversity, I’m sure someone will be showing up supportive, but even the hit on the economic point, we just saw that the former president met with oil executives last week, saying ‘Hey, you give me a billion dollars, and I’ll make sure that you get the policies that are favorable to raising gas prices and making sure that a lot of these companies continue to price gouge without proper oversight or regulation.'"

Ocasio-Cortez is one of the architects of the "Green New Deal," a multi-trillion dollar initiative that aims to guide the U.S. towards achieving net-zero emissions within a decade, while simultaneously guaranteeing job creation. She is also a key figure behind the "Green New Deal for Public Housing," which proposes a federal government-led transformation of America's public housing infrastructure, including the replacement of gas stoves with electric alternatives and the installation of electric vehicle chargers, among other changes.

Karoline Leavitt, the national press secretary for the Trump campaign, countered Ocasio-Cortez's claims, telling the Daily Caller News Foundation, "Joe Biden is controlled by environmental extremists who are trying to implement the most radical energy agenda in history and force Americans to purchase electric vehicles they can’t afford. President Trump is supported by people who share his vision of American energy dominance to protect our national security and bring down the cost of living for all Americans."

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Americans paid an average of $2.55 per gallon for all types of gas in January 2020, just before the pandemic hit. These figures have significantly increased since November 2020, the month when President Joe Biden won the presidential election, with the average price reaching $3.61 per gallon in April 2024, after peaking at $4.92 in June 2022.

In an attempt to curb soaring energy costs, the administration released approximately 180 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. Furthermore, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced plans to release one million barrels of gasoline from the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve to reduce gas prices several months before the 2024 elections.

Democrats, including Ocasio-Cortez, have attributed energy inflation to corporate collusion and greed, as well as other factors such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, numerous energy analysts and experts have partly blamed the price hikes on the Biden administration’s climate agenda, which exceeds $1 trillion. The administration has set explicit targets to decarbonize the American power sector by 2030 and the overall U.S. economy by 2050.

The administration has implemented several measures to limit domestic oil and gas production, imposed strict environmental regulations affecting energy producers, and provided substantial subsidies favoring green energy sources like wind and solar. According to the American Energy Alliance, a right-leaning energy interest group, these policies collectively contribute to the gradual increase in prices that consumers pay at the pump and elsewhere.
