In response to Iran's recent assault on Israel, former U.S. President Donald Trump revived a 2018 tweet in which he issued a stern warning to the Iranian President.

The tweet, written in capital letters, cautioned against threatening the United States with "DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH."

The 2018 tweet read, “To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!”

Trump shared a screenshot of this tweet on his social media platform, Truth Social, where it was lauded by Florida Senator Rick Scott.

Throughout his presidency, Trump's foreign policy was often seen as erratic, challenging many established norms of U.S. and international diplomacy. His close relationships with authoritarian figures such as Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, as well as his undermining of western power structures like NATO, drew widespread criticism.

The original tweet was posted in 2018 amidst rising tensions with Iran, following a warning from then Iranian President Hassan Rouhani that a war with the US would be the "mother of all wars."

This reposting of the tweet highlights Trump's readiness to escalate tensions with foreign leaders during periods of conflict.

Current U.S. President Joe Biden had previously cautioned Iran against attacking Israel after an April 1 airstrike in which Israel eliminated a high-ranking Iranian military commander in Syria. Biden is reportedly advising Israel against retaliating with force to Saturday's attack and has stated that the U.S. will not engage in a counterstrike against Iran.

During a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, Trump also commented on Iran's assault on Israel, stating, “They’re under attack right now. That’s because we show great weakness. The weakness that we’ve shown is unbelievable, and it would not have happened if we were in office.”

Despite the ongoing conflict in Israel, Trump has not publicly outlined his approach to the issue should he secure a second term in the White House. He has previously criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for "letting us down" prior to the U.S.'s 2020 assassination of a top Iranian commander. Trump has also commended Hezbollah, a Lebanese group aligned with Iran and designated as terrorists by the U.S., as "very smart."
