In a tragic turn of events, a New York City police officer lost his life after being fatally shot by a hardened criminal during a standard traffic stop in Queens on Monday evening.

The fallen officer, Jonathan Diller, had served the force for three years and was widely recognized for his courage by his peers and city officials.

As reported by Fox News, the unfortunate incident unfolded just before 6 pm outside 1919 Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway. Diller and his partner had approached a vehicle that was illegally parked. As they neared the vehicle, the suspect, seated in the passenger seat, drew his firearm and opened fire, leading to a gunfight.

Officer Diller was hit in the abdomen, just beneath his bulletproof vest. His partner managed to shoot the suspect. Both Diller and the suspect were immediately rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, Diller succumbed to his injuries while the suspect survived.

The vehicle's driver, a 41-year-old man, was also arrested in April 2023 on a gun charge. His identity has also been withheld. Despite his arrest, he was back on the streets shortly after.

Mayor Eric Adams, during a press conference, expressed his frustration, "Less than a year gun charge. He's back on the streets. April 2023. This is what you call not a crime problem, a recidivist problem. Same bad people doing bad things to good people. Less than a year, he's back on the streets with another gun."
