Before the previous year, the NFL saw a decrease in concussions.

However, new documents that show a review of 2022 show an upward trend in concussions for the NFL, and that’s concerning.

According to Fox News, “The NFL reported 149 concussions were diagnosed in 271 regular season games compared to 126 in 2021. The total is also 14% higher than the three-year average from 2018 to 2020.”

However, one doctor says that the reason for the uptick in concussions is that there is now a new protocol. The definition of what classifies as a concussion is now broader. This change came into effect after an injury suffered by Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Tagovailoa first suffered a back injury. He was wobbly going into the game the next week and suffered a concussion. This contributed to everyone being more cautious on the field.

According to ESPN, “Dr. Allen Sills did not say whether he thought better diagnostics drove the numbers, but he did reveal that league medical staffs performed an average of 1.6 evaluations per game -- a number that has risen over time, Sills said. In addition, he said, there were nearly twice as many medical timeouts in 2022 by independent spotters and on-field officials compared to 2021.”

Head injuries were an essential part of conversations during the 2022 NFL season, leading to everyone being more vigilant. NFL leaders and doctors also keep data to determine which positions are more vulnerable. This resulted in the helmet industry working to create a helmet specifically for quarterbacks to help prevent concussions because this position is at a higher risk for concussions than other positions.

On the bright side, the National Football League saw a lower rate of concussions during training camp. Players wore extra protection to prevent concussions, which saw positive results.
