Maher was referring to a group of Black students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who called for the removal of its law school’s statue of President Lincoln in 2015 that was initially rejected for being “too extreme,” though was later taken down in 2020 after the Black Student Union and the Student Inclusion Coalition backed the removal.
