President Joe Biden confused attendees at a White House event while announcing that he had contracted COVID-19 instead of Vice President Kamala Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff.

“There's been a little change in the arrangement with who’s on the stage because the first lady’s husband contracted COVID,” Biden declared Tuesday.

Biden had to be corrected before joking that first lady Jill Biden was “fine,” acknowledging that he had accidentally referred to himself. “The second lady, the first gentleman,” he went on. “How ’bout that?”

The 'Second Gentleman' Douglas Emhoff tested positive for COVID-19, a spokeswoman for Harris said on Tuesday. The White House has not released information about whether Emhoff, who has received three doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, is experiencing symptoms.

Both Emhoff and Harris withdrew from scheduled appearances at an Equal Pay Day event at the White House. Harris bowed out due to what aides described as “an abundance of caution.” In his remarks at the Equal Pay Day event, President Biden said that the Vice President “chose not to take a chance since her husband had contracted COVID, although he’s feeling very well, I’m told.”

“The earlier that Equal Pay Day arrives, the closer our Nation has come to achieving pay fairness,” the President also said in a prepared statement. In 2020, the average woman working full-time, year-round, made 83 cents to a typical man’s dollar — up one cent from the previous year.

“But while we should celebrate the progress we have made,” Biden continued, “we should not be satisfied until Equal Pay Day is no longer necessary at all.” “Occupational segregation feeds this negative impact and has significant impacts for women, for families, and for the economy,” said Wendy Chun-Hoon, director of the Labor Department’s Women’s Bureau. She spoke about the report to journalists on Monday afternoon.

“The Vice President tested negative for COVID-19 today and will continue to test,” Harris’s deputy press secretary, Sabrina Singh, told reporters. Earlier Tuesday, Vice President Harris had stood beside Biden and other prominent lawmakers, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, as the President touted and then signed the $1.5 trillion government funding bill into law.

The 81-year-old Democrats are second and third-in-line for the presidency, behind Harris.

“We did it, Joe,” Emhoff had quipped, quoting a Harris 2020 election meme.
