Podcaster Joe Rogan criticized Democrats in a December podcast with American surfer Shane Dorian. While talking about the environmental damage the Coronavirus masks cause, Rogan stressed, "Masks are like the Democrats' MAGA hat."

"You wear it to make people feel comfortable," Rogan said about masks in a late-December edition of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

"I know it's illogical, and I'm fine wearing it if it relaxes people and makes them feel better. But if people want to argue that they do something, it just doesn't make any sense, man. It doesn't make any sense," Rogan added.

"I don't even know if they work," Rogan persisted in the podcast episode. "I don't think they do. I mean maybe they stop spittle from getting into someone. If you can get your finger in the side of it, and air is coming out."

"I just feel like it's one of those things where we accepted early on," Rogan said, claiming the presumed ineffectiveness of masks.

"And now we're just pretending it's somehow or another protective. But at the end of the day, it's really just a piece of paper over your mouth and you're breathing perfectly through it, so like how does that work?" he asked.

The discussion on disposable masks began when Dorian and Rogan discovered that 1.6 billion disposable masks entered the ocean in 2020 and will take 450 years to biodegrade, according to Visual Capitalist's reporting.

Health experts reveal that cloth masks do not protect against the current dominant COVID-19 variant Omicron.

Linsey Marr, who works as a researcher at Virginia Tech, told NPR, “cloth masks are not going to cut it with Omicron.”

Though cloth masks became notorious due to the ongoing pandemic, many people still wear them as a form of safety. According to USA Today, health officials indicate cloth masks do not protect against small virus particles seeping into the mouth or nose.

Omicron is now regarded as the most infectious and easily transmissible variant of COVID-19. Experts say maybe not even cloth masks with thick material can stop the variant.

Dr. Robert Wachter is the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, also spoke with NPR about the contagious variant.

“It’s very contagious,” Wachter told NPR. “And the kind of encounter that you could have had with prior versions of the virus that would have left you uninfected, there’s now a good chance you will get infected from it.”

Alternatively, experts recommend people wear N95 or KN95 masks to protect against Omicron.
