No less than 16 people were murdered, and 32 were injured from an explosion in southern Afghanistan, new reports say.

The Friday bombing took place throughout prayers at a Shiite mosque in Kandahar, located in the southern area of Afghanistan. Qari Saeed Khosty, a spokesman for the Taliban-run government of Afghanistan, confirmed that the explosion had taken place in a tweet.

"We are saddened to learn that an explosion took place in a mosque of the Shia brotherhood in the first district of Kandahar city in which a number of our compatriots were martyred and wounded," Khosty reportedly announced.

Since the Taliban's takeover of Kabul on Aug. 15, the organization has been faced with dealing with threats from ISIS-K, the local Islamic State affiliate organization.

Earlier this month, the Taliban raided one ISIS camp, leaving numerous insurrectionists from the organization dead after a bombing that took place outside of Eid Gah mosque, resulting in five deaths.

A witness, Murtaza, who goes by one name like many people in Afghanistan, told the AP by phone that four suicide bombers entered the mosque — two detonating explosives at a security gate to clear the way for the other two to enter the compound, where prayers were continuing. He explained that roughly 500 people may have been in attendance.

"Life is becoming difficult and risky in Afghanistan for every Afghan, especially for Shias as Isis are only targeting Shia Muslims in Afghanistan. The world communities must help Afghanistan and Afghans in this terrible time."
