Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) slammed House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) following his refusal to state whether he believed the 2020 presidential election was "stolen" from former President Trump.

Earlier on Sunday, Scalise was pressed by "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace on whether or not he believed the 2020 election had legitimately been won by President Biden.

"Do you think the 2020 election was 'stolen' from Donald Trump? And in continuing to make that charge...do you think that that hurts, undermines American democracy?" Wallace asked Scalise on Fox News Sunday.

Scalise refused to directly answer the question, repeatedly pointing to constitutional rules and states' laws on elections.

"I've been very clear from the beginning. If you look at a number of states, they didn't follow their state-passed laws that govern the election for president. That is what the United States Constitution says," he responded.

While appearing on the show, Scalise repeatedly refused to respond to questioning about whether he believed the election was stolen. When Wallace said he took his side-stepped answers as an acceptance of the "big lie," Scalise did not refute this assessment.

Scalise also refused to confirm or deny if he would vote to hold Trump advisers who resist subpoenas in contempt of Congress. Trump has reportedly told former aides to resist subpoenas from the Jan. 6 panel that Cheney sits on.

Trump and many of his Republican allies continue to baselessly claim that President Joe Biden won the presidential election through widespread voter fraud. During an interview with Fox News Sunday, Scalise was pressed multiple times by host Chris Wallace to answer whether he agreed with the extraordinary allegation, but the Louisiana Republican side-stepped and did not respond directly.

Sharing a clip of the interview, Cheney tweeted on Sunday, "Millions of Americans have been sold a fraud that the election was stolen. Republicans have a duty to tell the American people that this is not true. Perpetuating the Big Lie is an attack on the core of our constitutional republic.”

Cheney's rejection of the so-called big lie has alienated her from many of her GOP peers. Last month, Cheney was named as vice chairwoman of the Jan. 6 select committee investigating the attack on the Capitol at the beginning of this year.

She previously slammed Trump for perpetuating claims of a stolen election, saying those who embrace such claims were “poisoning our democratic system.”

"The 2020 presidential election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system," she tweeted back in May.

Along with GOP Representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, Cheney has become one of the most vocal conservative critics of Trump and his faction of the Republican Party. Cheney and Kinzinger were both selected by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, to serve on the House select committee investigating the violence of January 6. The two have received significant backlash from pro-Trump colleagues.
