Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett warned the US and other countries attempting to rekindle the nuclear deal with Iran to “wake up” after the election of a hardline judge as the nation's president.

Talking at a televised cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Bennett announced that Ebrahim Raisi, a protege of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would establish a “regime of brutal hangmen,” according to Reuters.

“Raisi’s election is, I would say, the last chance for world powers to wake up before returning to the nuclear agreement, and understand who they are doing business with,” said Bennett, who succeeded Benjamin Netanyahu last week after the former prime minister failed to build a new government.

“A regime of brutal hangmen must never be allowed to have weapons of mass-destruction,” Bennett stated. “Israel’s position will not change on this.”

Raisi, Iran’s chief jurist who is under US sanctions for human rights violations, pulled in 62 percent of the vote in Saturday’s election that was marked by remarkably low turnout — less than half the nation's eligible voters cast a ballot.

Raisi has never publicly addressed allegations around his role in what Washington and rights groups have called the extrajudicial executions of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.

Seen by analysts and insiders as representing the security establishment at its most fearsome, Raisi, 60, had been widely tipped to win the contest, thanks to Khamenei’s endorsement.

Iran’s regional allies, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and militant Islamist group Hamas welcomed Raisi’s election. Amnesty International’s Secretary General Agnès Callamard said his victory was “a grim reminder that impunity reigns supreme in Iran”.

“We continue to call for Ebrahim Raisi to be investigated for his involvement in past and ongoing crimes under international law, including by states that exercise universal jurisdiction,” she announced in a statement.

Outgoing pragmatist President Hassan Rouhani, blocked by the constitution from attempting a third term, visited Raisi at his office to congratulate him, and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said he would lead Iran well.

Iran has never acknowledged the mass executions, and Raisi himself has never publicly addressed allegations about his role.

Bennett has carried on with Netanyahu’s belief that the US should not rejoin the nuclear deal that former President Donald Trump withdrew from in 2018.

The Biden administration has announced it wanted to restart negotiations with Iran regarding returning to the deal the Obama administration brokered with world powers in 2015.

It has started talks with the nations still participating in the accord — Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany.
