The state is at it again with canceling anything that states a gender because some people suddenly find it 'offensive' to them.
The measure, Assembly Bill 1084, would expect retailers that have 500 or more employees to “to maintain undivided areas of its sales floor where the majority of those items being offered are displayed, regardless of whether an item has traditionally been marketed for either girls or for boys,” according to The Sacramento Bee.
Moreover, signage marking whether a children’s toy is for boys or girls would not be permitted, and online retailers who carry business in California would have to specify toy and child care sections with unisex labels.

The bill is co-authored by Assemblyman Evan Low and Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia, both Democrats, and would take effect on Jan. 1, 2024, if enacted and would punish retailers with a $1,000 fine.

Low said he was motivated to bring the bill forward by Target’s decision in 2015 to lift all gender-based signs.
“As much as I’d like to think of this as watershed legislation, this is something the industry is already doing. We’re just trying to play catch up,” Low said.

Low also said that he was somewhat driven by one of his staffer's daughters, who purportedly expressed frustration with having to look for science toys in the “boys aisle.”
“That was the impetus of this, which is how do we make a safe space today for children in society,” he said.
Back in 2015, after receiving complaints about its “gender-based" signs, Target had announced it would no longer label products for either boys or girls.

“Right now, our teams are working across the store to identify areas where we can phase out gender-based signage to help strike a better balance,” said a statement from Target back in the day. “For example, in the kids’ Bedding area, signs will no longer feature suggestions for boys or girls, just kids. In the Toys aisles, we’ll also remove reference to gender, including the use of pink, blue, yellow or green paper on the back walls of our shelves. You’ll see these changes start to happen over the next few months.”

The retailer said it will continue to differentiate between men’s and women’s apparel, where there are fit and sizing differences, however, they will no longer label toys, home, or entertainment products with a specific gender.

In the statement, Target explained that the signs were originally there to help guests navigate the store efficiently, “while pointing the way towards more inspiration and great products.”
