Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer were re-elected on Tuesday as managers of their councils, predicting another hard two years in a closely split Senate where majority control remains unknown.

Tuesday’s election proceeds McConnell’s streak as the longest-serving GOP leader in the Senate. Schumer, in the meantime, will begin his third time as Senate Democratic leader. Both leaders were reelected by approval.

Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark) and John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) gave speeches to formally call on McConnell. Cotton glorified the Kentucky Republican for playing the “long game.” He also cited the many nicknames McConnell’s been given over the years, including “Darth Vader” and the “grim reaper.”

“I’ll conclude by grinning at how Mitch’s critics keep giving him nicknames intended as an insult that he keeps adopting with glee,” Cotton said. “A few weeks ago, someone called him the Apex Predator of American politics, which may be the best yet. I nominate our leader, the Apex Predator of the United States Senate, Addison Mitchell McConnell Jr.”

Tuesday’s leadership election was the first time the Senate Democratic council met in person in about eight months, because of the coronavirus.

Senators wanted to know when they would address the party’s message and electoral performance last week, according to a source prepared for the meeting. Senate Democrats will hold their weekly caucus call this afternoon.

“We picked up seats, we have a chance to still be in the majority and while I think you have to engage in a process of reflection we also shouldn’t beat ourselves up too badly,” said Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.). “Chuck is also just a very unique figure in the caucus. No one works harder to keep in touch with everyone in the caucus… there was no question about who our leader was going to be. “
