The news agency initially reported in 2022 that the DoJ had initiated a criminal investigation into Tesla and its claims about self-driving capabilities. However, the extent of the investigation was not previously disclosed.

The DoJ has refrained from commenting on the matter, and Tesla has yet to respond to requests for comment.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has consistently asserted that the company will introduce fully autonomous vehicles and that its software will eventually outperform human drivers. However, Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving beta software have attracted regulatory scrutiny over the years.

In December, following a two-year investigation, Tesla issued an over-the-air recall for approximately two million vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that the Autopilot system lacked sufficient safeguards to prevent misuse by drivers.

On Tuesday, Reuters reported that the agency had requested more detailed responses and documentation from Tesla related to the recall.

All current Tesla models are equipped with the company's Autopilot driver-assist program. Additionally, owners have the option to purchase the Full Self-Driving beta feature for $8,000. This feature allows the vehicle to automatically change lanes, enter and exit highways, recognize stop signs and traffic lights, and park. However, both programs necessitate constant monitoring by a licensed driver.
