A White House reporter directly pressed President Donald Trump on whether he would “reconsider” U.S. membership in the World Health Organization (WHO) in light of mounting public concern over a new hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship.

The virus, which has been blamed for three deaths and a rare instance of person-to-person transmission aboard the vessel, has generated intense media attention but far less alarm among health officials, according to Mediaite. Experts have emphasized that the current outbreak does not carry the characteristics of a Covid-style global pandemic, a distinction that underscores how quickly public fear can outpace scientific assessment.

Speaking to reporters on the South Lawn as he prepared to depart for Sterling, Virginia, President Trump fielded multiple questions about the situation and the federal response. When asked for an update, he replied, “We have it. We have very good people looking at it. It seems to be okay. They know the virus very well. They’ve worked with it for a long time. They know it very well, not easy to pass on. So we hope that’s true.”

The exchange quickly turned to the broader question of international health governance and whether the administration might reverse course on its break with the WHO. A reporter pressed, “On the hantavirus–. Will you reconsider leaving the World Health Organization because of the outbreak of hantavirus?” to which the President responded, “No, we seem to have things under very good control. They know that virus very well. It’s been around a long time.”

President Trump further contrasted the hantavirus with the coronavirus that fueled the 2020 pandemic, stressing its limited transmissibility. “Not easily transferable, unlike COVID. But we’ll see. We’re studying it very closely. We have very good people studying it very closely,” he said, signaling confidence in U.S. expertise rather than reliance on global bureaucracies.

The President’s stance is consistent with his long-standing skepticism toward international organizations that, in his view, dilute American sovereignty while consuming vast U.S. resources. He signed an executive order on January 20, 2025, titled “WITHDRAWING THE UNITED STATES FROM THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION,” a move that became official on January 22, 2026, even though the United States had been the WHO’s largest financial backer.

For many conservatives, the hantavirus episode reinforces the argument that the United States is fully capable of managing health threats through its own institutions and scientific talent, without ceding authority to unaccountable global bodies. As the administration continues to monitor the outbreak, the President’s refusal to revisit the WHO withdrawal underscores a broader policy principle: prioritizing national control, accountability, and prudent use of taxpayer dollars over reflexive deference to international agencies.
