Conan O’Brien opened the 2026 Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre with a pointed shot at Hollywood’s long-whispered problem of sexual exploitation, immediately signaling that the industry’s self-congratulatory bubble would not go unpunctured.

According to the Daily Caller, O’Brien dispensed with the usual soft-gloved monologue and went straight for the jugular, mocking the room of A-listers by dragging their profession’s dirtiest secret into the spotlight. “It’s the first time since 2012 that there are no British actors nominated for best actor or best actress,” O’Brien said. “A British spokesperson said, ‘Yeah, well, at least we arrest our pedophiles.'”

The veteran late-night host also mocked the predictable left-wing grandstanding that has turned awards shows into lectures rather than entertainment. “I should warn you, tonight could get political. And if that makes you uncomfortable, there’s an alternate #Oscars hosted by Kid Rock at the Dave & Busters down the street” he said.

That Kid Rock reference was not random; the musician recently headlined an “All-American Halftime Show” during Super Bowl LX, a patriotic, conservative alternative to the NFL’s officially sanctioned spectacle. The event, hosted by Turning Point USA, was designed as a direct counter-programming effort to the Bad Bunny performance that catered to the usual progressive cultural tastes.

O’Brien’s barbs were not limited to ideology, as he also skewered the show’s technical chaos with a mix of scripted jokes and spontaneous reactions. The broadcast was plagued by camera mishaps and timing failures, undercutting the supposed professionalism of Hollywood’s biggest night.

Viewers watched as several acceptance speeches were abruptly cut off mid-sentence, with winners losing their moment for no apparent reason. Microphones repeatedly faded out just as honorees began addressing the audience, even when their remarks were well within any reasonable time limit.

O’Brien openly mocked the production on air, at one point burying his face in his hands as the awkwardness mounted. His visible discomfort underscored how far the Oscars have drifted from polished glamour toward disorganized, self-serious spectacle.

The host, however, was not the only figure willing to puncture Hollywood’s ego. Kieran Culkin delivered one of the night’s sharper moments while presenting Best Supporting Actor.

Culkin announced Sean Penn’s victory for his role in “One Battle After Another,” then immediately jabbed the absent star. “Sean Penn couldn’t be here this evening. Or didn’t want to. So I’ll be accepting the award on his behalf,” Culkin told the crowd.

Penn, who has long had a fraught relationship with awards shows and the trappings of celebrity, skipped the ceremony despite beating a stacked field. He topped his co-star Benicio del Toro in “One Battle After Another,” Jacob Elordi in “Frankenstein,” Delroy Lindo in “Sinners”, and Stellan Skarsgård in “Sentimental Value,” leaving others to collect the hardware while Hollywood once again revealed its own discomfort with the culture it has created.
