Republicans’ quiet campaign to elevate their preferred Democratic opponent in Texas appears to have paid off, with Democratic Rep.

Jasmine Crockett now stepping into the Senate spotlight.

According to the Daily Caller, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) began testing Crockett’s name in internal polling as early as July, a move first revealed by the Daily Caller News Foundation. As reported by the Daily Caller, those surveys showed Crockett leading a hypothetical Democratic primary field, prompting GOP strategists to intensify efforts to coax her into the race against incumbent Republican Sen. John Cornyn.

“When we saw the results, we were like, ‘OK, we got to disseminate this far and wide,’” a source familiar with the process told the outlet. That same source described a deliberate push to amplify Crockett’s perceived viability among Democratic voters and activists across Texas.

Crockett was quickly tagged by Republicans as the “easiest opponent to beat” for Cornyn, who is seeking another term while fending off a contested GOP primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Republican Rep. Wesley Hunt, according to NOTUS. For conservatives, the calculus is straightforward: face a progressive firebrand in a red-leaning state and force Democrats to defend a candidate whose record and rhetoric are likely out of step with Texas’ broader electorate.

The source familiar also told NOTUS that phone calls and text messages were deployed to high-propensity voters and Democrats in Texas, urging them to press Crockett to enter the race. “That was really a sustained effort that we orchestrated across the ecosystem for several months,” the source told the outlet.

“Not only was it getting positive news coverage, but her office was directly having traffic driven to it in terms of phone calls urging her to run,” the source added, underscoring how Republican operatives helped manufacture grassroots-style enthusiasm. The strategy reflects a broader GOP willingness to shape the opposing primary field, particularly when Democrats appear eager to rally behind high-profile progressives despite their weak general-election track records in conservative states.

When the Daily Caller asked about the NRSC report and its polling, the committee’s communications director, Joanna Rodriguez, pointed to Crockett’s own assessment of Democrats’ odds against Cornyn. “Crockett said herself no Texas Democrat is beating John Cornyn, and the threat of her in the U.S. Senate makes it clearer now than ever that Cornyn is the only conservative who will keep Texas red and safeguard President Trump’s Senate Majority,” Rodriguez said.

Her statement referenced Crockett’s comments on Politico’s podcast, “The Conversation,” hosted by Dasha Burns on Oct. 30. On that program, Crockett openly questioned whether any Democrat could realistically unseat Cornyn in a statewide contest.

On the podcast, Crockett discussed her potential Senate bid against Cornyn stating, “I’m going to be flat out with you and tell you that I don’t think that there’s a Democrat that can take out Cornyn.” She added that her decision to run would hinge on internal polling that demonstrated viability in the general election, not merely strength in a Democratic primary.

“For me, I would be making a very last-minute decision because it’s not just about winning the primary. You gotta win the general,” she emphasized, acknowledging the political reality that Texas remains a Republican stronghold despite Democrats’ recurring claims of an imminent “blue wave.”

Texas state Rep. James Talarico is also running for the Senate seat, adding another progressive voice to a field that may struggle to appeal beyond the Democratic base. Former Democratic Rep. Colin Allred, who previously mounted a high-profile but unsuccessful challenge to Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, suspended his campaign against Cornyn just hours before Crockett announced her candidacy, citing a desire to avoid a bruising primary that could weaken the eventual nominee.

Following his withdrawal, Allred declared he would instead run in the Democratic primary for Texas’ 33rd Congressional District. His move has intensified intraparty friction, with many Democrats now coalescing around Rep. Julie Johnson, who currently represents the 32nd District but is seeking the 33rd after redistricting reshaped the political map.

Crockett’s entry into the Senate race has reignited debate among Democrats about their already slim chances of reclaiming the Senate in 2026 and whether they should risk a divisive primary against a candidate Republicans clearly prefer.

Her first campaign ad features Crockett staring directly into the camera while a voice-over of President Donald Trump labels her a “low IQ person” and mocks her rising profile within the Democratic Party, a messaging choice likely to energize the left while reinforcing conservative skepticism about her judgment and priorities.
