President Donald Trump is weighing an ambitious redesign of the executive mansion that would add an entirely new level to the White House complex, a project he has dubbed an “Upper West Wing."

According to The Post Millennial, President Trump disclosed in an interview with The New York Times that the expansion remains in the conceptual stage and will proceed only if he personally signs off on the final design. No construction schedule has been released, and officials emphasize that “nothing has been finalized,” underscoring that the proposal is still under review rather than a foregone conclusion.

The plan envisions a new floor built above the colonnade that connects the West Wing to the main residence, a discreet but significant alteration to one of the nation’s most iconic buildings. Trump indicated the additional space could serve as offices for West Wing staff or be dedicated as “first ladies’ offices for future first ladies,” signaling an effort to modernize the working footprint of the presidency while honoring the traditional role of the First Lady.

The White House has not issued a formal announcement on the “Upper West Wing,” but the idea surfaces as broader renovations are already reshaping the grounds. The administration is advancing construction of a new White House ballroom to replace the East Wing, a high-profile undertaking that has drawn scrutiny for its scope but is being financed with private donations rather than taxpayer dollars.

Updated ballroom plans were presented Thursday to the National Capital Planning Commission, where architect Shalom Baranes outlined how the project fits into a larger architectural vision. During that meeting, Baranes said officials have explored the possibility of a modest expansion on the opposite side of the complex once the East Wing work is complete, describing it as a way to preserve the classical harmony of the structure.

“We’re considering the idea of a modest one-story addition to the West Wing,” Baranes said. “The reason to think about that is so that we would reinstate the symmetry around the central pavilion of the White House.” He noted that the concept “has not yet been fully examined,” reflecting a cautious, incremental approach rather than the sweeping, unilateral changes often favored by progressive planners.

Trump has been signaling his interest in reshaping the White House grounds for months, underscoring a hands-on executive style that contrasts with the bureaucratic drift of prior administrations. In August 2025, he was photographed walking on the West Wing roof, surveying the Rose Garden and the future ballroom site, which broke ground in September, a visual reminder that the current occupant intends to leave a lasting, privately funded mark on the seat of the executive branch.
