"President Trump ordered action — and the Department of War is delivering. Today, I’m announcing Operation SOUTHERN SPEAR," Hegseth declared in a post on X. This operation, spearheaded by Joint Task Force Southern Spear and @SOUTHCOM, aims to protect the homeland by targeting narco-terrorists and curbing the influx of drugs that have plagued American communities. "The Western Hemisphere is America’s neighborhood – and we will protect it," he asserted.

According to Western Journal, the United States has stationed approximately 15,000 troops in the region, bolstered by the recent arrival of the USS Gerald Ford carrier strike group off the South American coast. This deployment follows a series of operations targeting drug traffickers' vessels. During a Wednesday briefing, President Trump was presented with military options to intensify the pressure campaign against Venezuela, a nation that has become a focal point of U.S. foreign policy due to its ties with drug cartels and its reliance on outdated Soviet-era military equipment.

As reported by ABC, the Venezuelan military's operational capabilities are severely hampered by the country's prolonged economic crisis, as noted by defense analyst Andrei Serbin Pont of the CRIES think tank.

The intertwined objectives of dismantling drug cartels and addressing the legitimacy of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro have garnered support from key Republican figures. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina took to X to express his backing of President Trump's firm stance on Venezuela. "To those who wonder about what’s going on in Venezuela, you should understand President Trump is deadly serious about stopping the narcoterrorist state of Venezuela from continuing to poison Americans with illegal drugs," Graham stated. He further emphasized, "President Trump also believes Maduro is an illegitimate leader whose days are numbered. I agree with President Trump’s assessment of the situation in Venezuela."

Drawing parallels to historical precedents, Graham likened the situation to the U.S. intervention in Panama under President George H.W. Bush, which resulted in the ousting of leader Manuel Noriega. "I do not consider Maduro a legitimate leader but rather, a drug trafficker who has been indicted in U.S. courts," Graham wrote, highlighting the urgency of addressing what he termed a "drug caliphate" in the region, encompassing Venezuela, Colombia, and Cuba.

He expressed optimism about President Trump's commitment to ending Maduro's "reign of terror," stating, "The sooner Maduro leaves, the better for the people of Venezuela and the United States."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio underscored the mission's focus on combating "organized criminal narco-terrorists," as reported by the Associated Press. "That’s what he’s authorized. That’s what the military’s doing. That’s why our assets are there," Rubio affirmed, reinforcing the administration's resolve to address the threats emanating from Venezuela.

The military buildup and strategic operations in the region reflect a broader commitment to safeguarding American interests and promoting stability in the Western Hemisphere.
