In a bid to fortify the United States' military prowess, Shield AI, a U.S. defense technology firm, is in the process of creating an artificial intelligence (AI) piloted aircraft.

This innovative technology is expected to bolster the U.S. military's preparedness for potential future conflicts with adversaries such as China. The AI-piloted aircraft, known as the X-BAT, is designed to operate even in the event of an enemy attack on U.S. runways, a strategy that could potentially ground U.S. aircraft.

As reported by Fox News, the X-BAT aircraft is a marvel of modern technology. It is capable of operating without the need for runways or GPS, can ascend to heights of 50,000 feet, and can cover distances exceeding 2,000 nautical miles.

Furthermore, it can execute various strike or air defense missions. The aircraft's design allows it to operate from small islands, ships, and improvised locations, thereby enhancing its versatility in potential conflict scenarios.

Armor Harris, vice president of aircraft engineering at Shield AI, highlighted the strategic importance of the X-BAT in an interview with Fox News. He said, “China has built this anti-access aerial denial bubble that holds our runways at risk. They’ve basically said, ‘We’re not going to compete stealth-on-stealth in the air — we’ll target your aircraft before they even get off the ground.'” This statement underscores the strategic shift in China's military approach, which the U.S. must counteract.

Harris further elaborated on the vulnerability of U.S. aircraft when grounded, a risk that the X-BAT is designed to mitigate. He stated, “The way to solve that problem is mobility. You’re always moving around. This is the only VTOL fighter being built today.”

The X-BAT aircraft is equipped with an autonomy system named Hivemind. This advanced system enables the aircraft to operate in challenging environments, reroute its flight to avoid potential threats, and swiftly identify enemy targets. Harris explained, “It’s reading and reacting to the situation around it. It’s not flying a pre-programmed route. If new threats appear, it can reroute itself or identify targets and then ask a human for permission to engage.”

Despite the high level of autonomy, Harris emphasized the role of human decision-making in the operation of the aircraft. He stated, “It’s very important to us that a human is always involved in making the use of lethal force decision. That doesn’t mean the person has to be in the cockpit — it could be remote or delegated through tasking — but there will always be a human decision-maker.”

The X-BAT aircraft presents a significant challenge to adversaries like China, according to Harris. He said, “X-BAT presents an asymmetric dilemma to an adversary like China. They don’t know where it’s coming from, and the cost of countering it is high.”

Shield AI recently shared images of the X-BAT on X, formerly known as Twitter. The company anticipates that the X-BAT will be combat-ready by 2029, as per Fox News.
