President Donald Trump has announced his intention to endorse a candidate in the 2026 U.S. Senate race in Texas, a contest that sees two of his political allies, Ken Paxton and John Cornyn, vying for the Republican nomination.

The President expressed his fondness for both candidates, lamenting their rivalry during a conversation with reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Italy for the funeral of Pope Francis.

As reported by The Epoch Times, Ken Paxton, who has held the position of Texas Attorney General since 2015, faced impeachment and suspension by the Texas House of Representatives in 2023. The Republican-led body accused him of felonious conduct involving personal favors.

However, Paxton was acquitted by the Texas Senate. His political career includes 12 years in the Texas legislature. John Cornyn, on the other hand, served as Texas Attorney General from 1999 to 2002 and was an associate justice of the Texas Supreme Court prior to that. The race also includes Rennie Mann, a local school board president in central Texas.

Endorsements have been pouring in for both candidates from notable figures within the Republican Party. Cornyn has secured backing from several Senate Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who defeated Cornyn in the Conference’s leadership election in 2024. Additionally, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has thrown its support behind Cornyn, underscoring his strong ties within the GOP establishment.

Conversely, Paxton has garnered endorsements from U.S. Representatives Lance Gooden and Troy Nehls, as well as former Texas GOP Chairman Matt Rinaldi. Notably, Senator Ted Cruz has chosen to remain neutral, refraining from endorsing either candidate in this high-stakes race.

The campaigns of both Paxton and Cornyn have yet to issue a response to requests for comment. As the race unfolds, the conservative base in Texas will be closely watching to see which candidate secures the coveted endorsement from President Trump, a figure whose influence remains significant within the Republican Party.

The outcome of this endorsement could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Texas politics and the broader national landscape.
