Stacey Abrams, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party and a well-known advocate for voting rights, is reportedly contemplating a third attempt to secure the governorship of Georgia in 2026.

This information was confirmed by a source familiar with the matter to Fox News Digital. Abrams, who previously served as a leader in Georgia's state legislature, narrowly lost to Governor Brian Kemp in the 2018 election and was defeated again in their 2022 rematch by a margin of nearly eight points.

As reported by Fox News, Governor Kemp, a popular conservative figure, is restricted by term limits from seeking reelection in 2026. The Cook Political Report, a respected nonpartisan political analysis group, has labeled the upcoming gubernatorial race in Georgia as a "toss-up," indicating a potentially fierce contest in this pivotal battleground state. Georgia's political landscape has mirrored national trends in recent presidential elections, with President Donald Trump winning the state in 2016 and 2024, while Joe Biden claimed victory in 2020.

On the Republican front, Attorney General Chris Carr has already declared his candidacy for governor, with his campaign set to launch in November 2024. Meanwhile, speculation surrounds Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, who is rumored to be considering a run for the Republican nomination. According to campaign filings reported by WABE, Jones has amassed $1.7 million for a leadership committee, trailing Carr by approximately half a million dollars.

In contrast, the Democratic field is also taking shape. Georgia State Senator Jason Esteves recently announced his gubernatorial campaign, while Rep. Lucy McBath, who had been exploring a potential run, has suspended her campaign to support her husband amid his battle with cancer.

Despite her previous electoral setbacks, Abrams has remained an influential political presence in Georgia. In 2023, she was appointed to the prestigious Ronald W. Walters Endowed Chair for Race and Black Politics at Howard University, a leading historically Black institution. Additionally, Abrams has served as a senior counsel for Rewiring America, a nonprofit focused on climate action. She is also the founder of Fair Fight Action, Fair Count, and the Southern Economic Advancement Project (SEAP), organizations dedicated to advancing voting rights, economic empowerment, and community development.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was the first to report Abrams' potential gubernatorial bid. Despite the speculation, Abrams did not respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment by the deadline. As the political landscape in Georgia continues to evolve, Abrams' decision could significantly impact the dynamics of the 2026 gubernatorial race.
