The White House has expressed unwavering support for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth following revelations by The New York Times that he allegedly disclosed Houthi rebel attack plans in a Signal group chat with family members.

Despite the controversy, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised Hegseth's leadership of the Pentagon during an appearance on Fox & Friends, describing his performance as "phenomenal."

According to the Daily Caller, these new allegations come on the heels of a previous incident where Hegseth reportedly shared a timeline of attacks on the Houthi rebels. This earlier breach occurred after National Security Advisor Mike Waltz inadvertently included Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg in the chat. The Senate Armed Services Committee's concerns prompted the Department of Defense Inspector General to initiate an investigation into the initial leak on April 3.

Leavitt emphasized President Trump's steadfast support for Hegseth, stating, "The President stands strongly behind Secretary Hegseth." She further commented on the challenges Hegseth faces, asserting, "This is what happens when the entire Pentagon is working against you and working against the monumental change you are trying to implement. Secretary Hegseth was nominated for this position because he is standing up for the warfighter…Unfortunately, there have been people at that building who don’t like the change the Secretary is trying to bring so they are leaking and lying to the mainstream media."

While the Pentagon has not responded to inquiries from the Daily Caller News Foundation, it did release a statement on Sunday denying that any classified information was compromised in the Signal chat. The ongoing investigation has led to the suspension of three senior advisors to Hegseth: Dan Caldwell, Darin Selnick, and Colin Carroll. Additionally, Hegseth's chief of staff, Joe Kasper, is reportedly planning to depart the Pentagon amid the turmoil. Kasper had initiated an investigation into leaks in March, though it remains unclear if his efforts are linked to the recent suspensions.

In a twist, former Pentagon spokesperson John Ullyot criticized Hegseth's leadership in a Politico op-ed, questioning the rationale behind the dismissals and suggesting they may not be related to the leak probe. Ullyot's critique is notable given his previous support for Hegseth's nomination.

Amidst the swirling allegations and internal strife, Hegseth has attributed the leaks to "disgruntled former employees," as reported by NBC News. The unfolding situation at the Pentagon underscores the challenges faced by Hegseth as he navigates both internal opposition and external scrutiny. As the investigation progresses, the implications for Hegseth's tenure and the broader dynamics within the Department of Defense remain to be seen.
