According to Newsmax, Van Hollen has officially requested this meeting through El Salvador's ambassador to the U.S. In his request, he stated, "I write to urgently request a meeting with President Bukele during his current visit to the United States to discuss the illegal detention of my constituent, Kilmar Abrego Garcia." The senator emphasized that Garcia's return to the U.S. has been mandated by a ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court.

Van Hollen has made it clear that if the meeting with President Bukele does not materialize, he is prepared to travel to El Salvador this week to assess Garcia's condition and negotiate his release. Last week, the senator expressed his frustration on social media, stating, "If the Trump Admin was able to illegally abduct Kilmar Abrego Garcia and send him to El Salvador in 72 hours, then they can sure as hell bring him home in less than that."
