Wilmore, along with his fellow astronaut Sunita Williams, made their return to Earth last week after spending over nine months aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Since his return, Deanna has observed a noticeable change in her husband's physical condition. "Barry does say gravity is not his friend right now. And you know the stamina is not there, and so they do have to rest and relax quite a bit because they're just not strong yet," she shared. The prolonged exposure to low gravity has had a significant impact on Wilmore's body, leading to substantial muscle and bone loss, among other health complications.

According to DailyMail.com, astronauts who undertake long-term missions on the ISS typically experience such health issues. However, given that Wilmore and Williams spent three months longer than the standard mission duration in space, their recovery process could be particularly lengthy, medical professionals have suggested.

The astronaut couple, along with their two daughters, Daryn and Logan, were reunited shortly after Wilmore's splashdown on March 18 off the Florida coast. Daryn, 19, posted online that her father is "doing good, it’s rough, but he’s a trooper."

Originally, the mission for Williams and Wilmore aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft was planned to last only eight days. However, due to technical difficulties with their spacecraft, they ended up spending more than nine months in space. The punishing weight of Earth's gravity was a stark contrast to their time in space, leaving them barely able to lift their arms or walk when they finally splashed down off the coast of Tallahassee, Florida, inside a SpaceX Dragon capsule on March 18.

As reported by local Tennessee news station WVLT 8, Wilmore has been primarily resting and watching March Madness since his return. His wife and daughters had the opportunity to watch the Dragon capsule's return to Earth from mission control. Upon their reunion, Deanna noted that there was "not a lot of talking, just a lot of hugging and enjoying the moment."

During his extended stay on the ISS, Wilmore missed several family milestones, including birthdays, his 30-year wedding anniversary, and Christmas. However, he managed to return in time for Logan's high school graduation, and the family is considering a celebratory trip this summer.

Despite the end of his mission, Wilmore faces a long recovery process due to the effects of living in low gravity. Both he and Williams may have lost up to half of their muscle mass and nearly a fifth of their bone density while on the ISS. Former astronauts have found that recovery can take up to 1.5 times the length of the mission, indicating that the pair may require over a year of physical therapy to fully recover.

Dr. Ehsan Jazini, a spine surgeon at VSI, previously told DailyMail.com that their rehabilitation program would likely involve progressive core and spinal stabilization exercises, stretching and mobility work, slow reintroduction to high-impact activities, and monitoring for signs of herniation or chronic pain issues. "NASA’s medical teams are well-equipped to handle this, but given the length of their mission, a longer recovery timeline should be expected," he said.

Following their splashdown, Williams and Wilmore were assisted onto stretchers and taken for medical checks, a standard procedure for astronauts returning from long-term space missions. They were then flown to NASA's Johnson Space Station in Houston, Texas. Photos taken after their arrival showed them up and walking, which experts suggest is a promising sign. However, concerns were raised about Williams' frail appearance, with medical experts pointing to her "visibly thin" wrists as a potential sign of rapid weight loss, muscle wasting, and bone deterioration.

Despite the astronauts' daily two-hour exercise regimen on the ISS, the longer the human body stays in space, the more challenging the recovery process can be upon return to Earth. "Even with pre-landing conditioning practices, their return to gravity is still a major adjustment to their spine, as nothing fully replicates that sudden shift back to Earth’s gravity," Dr. Jazini explained.
