Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is advocating for President Donald Trump to appoint Dr.

Joseph Ladapo, the Sunshine State's Surgeon General, as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

DeSantis believes that Dr. Ladapo's influence could extend beyond Florida, suggesting that his leadership at the CDC would be more impactful than his current role.

According to Fox News, DeSantis expressed his support for Dr. Ladapo's potential appointment on social media, stating, "Overhauling the CDC would be beneficial to FL. Joe could do more for FL as CDC Director than as FL Surgeon General." The governor also concurred with the notion that Ladapo would be a "transformative" and "history making" choice, emphasizing the doctor's courage and determination. "Dr. Joe Ladapo is all of those things and has the courage and determination to do what’s right when it’s not easy," DeSantis tweeted, adding that Ladapo's leadership would ensure that "MAHA [Make America Healthy Again] is not just an empty slogan."

The need for a new CDC director arose after President Trump withdrew the nomination of former U.S. Representative Dr. Dave Weldon. Weldon recounted the abrupt end to his nomination process, stating, "Twelve hours before my scheduled confirmation hearing in The Senate, I received a phone call from an assistant at the White House informing me that my nomination to be Director of CDC was being withdrawn because there were not enough votes to get me confirmed." Weldon expressed disappointment, noting that HHS Secretary Bobbie Kennedy had been eager to collaborate with him at the CDC.

Previously, DeSantis had proposed Dr. Ladapo for the position of Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services before President Trump selected Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for the role. In a tweet from November, DeSantis encouraged support for Ladapo, writing, "Retweet if you’d like to see this man — Dr. Joseph Ladapo — serve as the Secretary of HHS in the new Trump administration," accompanied by a photo of Ladapo.

As the search for a new CDC director continues, DeSantis's endorsement of Dr. Ladapo underscores the governor's commitment to reshaping national health policy in a manner that aligns with conservative values. This potential appointment could signal a shift towards a more state-focused approach to public health, reflecting the broader conservative agenda of prioritizing local governance and individual freedoms.
