Disney's latest cinematic venture, the live-action adaptation of "Snow White," has stumbled out of the gate, facing a storm of criticism and lackluster box office returns.

This reimagining of the 1937 animated classic, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, has been met with a wave of negative reviews and disappointing ticket sales during its opening weekend.

According to RedState, the film's debut has been anything but magical, with projections indicating a mere $45 million in earnings. This figure positions "Snow White" as one of Disney's least successful openings, drawing unfavorable comparisons to the underwhelming "Dumbo" remake of 2019.

As reported by Deadline, the film managed to garner $15.5 million by Friday afternoon across 4,200 theaters in North America, including $3.5 million from Thursday night previews. Despite hopes for a boost from weekend matinees and Sunday evening showings, the film's domestic box office is expected to languish in the mid-$40 million range.

The financial outlook is grim, especially considering Disney's hefty $270 million investment in the project. This is a stark contrast to earlier projections by Box Office Pro, which anticipated domestic earnings of up to $85 million. The film's reception has been marred by critiques labeling it a lackluster imitation of its predecessor, with a narrative perceived as pushing a modern agenda under the guise of "fairness." The use of CGI dwarves, rather than live actors, has also drawn ire from audiences and critics alike.

The film's troubled journey to release was foreshadowed by a series of missteps, notably involving Rachel Zegler, who plays the titular character. Her comments, perceived as dismissive of the original film and its audience, have sparked backlash, further complicating the film's reception. The phrase "Go Woke, Go Broke" has been invoked by critics, suggesting that Zegler's remarks, particularly those targeting Trump supporters, have contributed to the film's struggles.

Despite these challenges, Disney appears undeterred in its commitment to progressive values. As noted by RedState's Bob Hoge, the company's shareholders recently voted against a proposal to abandon their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This decision underscores Disney's continued embrace of modern social agendas, even in the face of financial setbacks.

The question remains: why attempt to modernize and alter a beloved classic like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"? Disney's decision to forge ahead with this reimagining, despite clear signals from their audience, has led to a situation where the company must now contend with the consequences of its choices. The outcome serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of straying too far from the values and expectations of a loyal fan base.
