In a troubling incident that has sparked widespread attention, Gina LaPlaca, the mayor of Lumberton, New Jersey, faces serious allegations of driving under the influence with her young child in the vehicle.

The incident reportedly occurred on St. Patrick's Day, when LaPlaca, a Democrat, allegedly admitted to consuming alcohol before driving to pick up her two-year-old son from daycare.

The situation escalated when a concerned bystander captured video footage of the 45-year-old mayor swerving dangerously on the road, narrowly avoiding a collision with a utility pole. This footage was subsequently shared with law enforcement, as detailed by ABC6.

Police later traced the vehicle to LaPlaca's residence, where they discovered an open container of alcohol inside the car. Court documents confirm that the toddler was securely fastened in a car seat in the rear passenger section of the vehicle.

According to the Daily Mail, LaPlaca's husband, Jason Carty, took to social media to defend his wife, acknowledging her struggles with addiction and announcing her intention to seek treatment. "Millions of Americans struggle with addiction and never get help. Gina LaPlaca is someone who has struggled, and is now getting the help she needs. I ask that everyone keep her in their thoughts as she moves forward on her road to recovery," Carty expressed on Facebook. He urged the public to overlook what he described as "exaggerated political hyperbole" and to remember LaPlaca's dedication to community service.

This incident is not the first time LaPlaca has faced public scrutiny. Earlier in the month, she was criticized for an outburst during a town meeting, where she was recorded using offensive language towards an attendee. The footage showed her being escorted out of the meeting while hurling insults. Chris Tommins, a resident of Lumberton, voiced his disapproval on social media, questioning why such behavior is tolerated and why LaPlaca continues to be elected. "Gina is a narcissist, manipulative and corrupt individual who thrives on power just like her husband. Lumberton and Mt. Holly residents need to stand up against the actions of these two. Another black eye to our town," Tommins wrote.

LaPlaca, who transitioned from a career as a business administrator to politics, was first elected mayor in 2020 and secured re-election in 2023. She now faces charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving, and endangering the welfare of a child. These charges raise significant concerns about her ability to lead and maintain the trust of her constituents.

As the legal proceedings unfold, questions linger about the implications of these allegations on LaPlaca's political career and the broader community. The situation underscores the importance of accountability and the need for public officials to uphold the values and responsibilities entrusted to them by their constituents.
