Don't Be Fooled By Whitmer And Trump’s “Nice” Chat—Michigan Still Needs A Democrat DETOX!

In the political landscape of Michigan, a fascinating trend has emerged among Democrats: they are adopting strategies and rhetoric reminiscent of President Trump.

This was particularly evident in last year's Senate campaign race, where newly elected Senator Elissa Slotkin faced off against Republican Mike Rogers. Slotkin, in a move that mirrored Trump's style, incorporated elements of his rhetoric into her campaign, a strategy that ultimately led to her victory.

Slotkin's campaign was marked by a fierce critique of Rogers, who she accused of briefly relocating to Florida before launching his Senate campaign. Rogers, in turn, criticized Slotkin's stance on electric vehicles.

As reported by RedState, Slotkin recently took an aggressive stance on the issue, reassuring voters in campaign ads and during the first debate that she drives a gas-powered car and opposes electric vehicle mandates. This is despite her vote in favor of the Biden administration’s rule that would transition the U.S. auto economy to two-thirds electric by 2032.

Interestingly, Trump himself owns a Tesla, but he has consistently advocated for the inclusion of gas-powered engines. Slotkin, too, appears to favor Detroit-made, gas-guzzling vehicles, a preference that seems to contradict her vote for Biden's mandates to phase out gasoline-powered vehicles.

Meanwhile, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has been seen to adopt a similar strategy, not only in her rhetoric but also in her interactions with President Trump. Whitmer recently met with Trump at the White House, a meeting she described as "productive."

"I had a productive meeting at the White House today with President Trump where we discussed bringing good paying jobs to Michigan," Whitmer told NewsNation. "We also discussed tariffs, the importance of keeping our Great Lakes clean and safe, and additional defense investments in the state," she added.

Whitmer's term ends in 2026, but she seems to be playing the long game, acting as though she has until January 1st, 2027. Her meeting with Trump is a rare display of bipartisan efforts between the White House and a Democratic swing state governor.

"I’m grateful for his time today and I’ll always work as hard as I can with anyone for the state of Michigan and its people," Whitmer said.

However, it's crucial to remember that Whitmer's track record has been less than stellar, despite her recent willingness to work across the aisle with a Republican president. Her handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the executive orders she issued were disastrous, as I previously covered in my article "Remember When Gretchen Whitmer Issued All Her Misguided COVID Orders Five Years Ago? Some Michiganians Do."

In 2021, journalist Charlie LeDuff partnered with the Mackinac Center to investigate the actual number of nursing home deaths during the pandemic. Their findings were shocking: Michigan's nursing home COVID deaths could have been underreported by 40% or higher.

LeDuff and the Mackinac Center forced the State of Michigan to release data on the actual number of people who died in care facilities. Their initial findings suggested that Michigan failed to collect the numbers that could have informed policy and potentially saved lives.

According to LeDuff’s Deadline Detroit story, they reviewed records after having to sue to have an FOIA request honored and found this: From March to June of 2020, the state audited 1,468 death records and of those 648 deaths were traced back to long-term care facilities. Applying that 44% average to the nearly 7,000 other vital records deaths recorded would suggest nearly 3,000 additional deaths in care facilities.

This is a stark reminder of the Whitmer Administration's treatment of the elderly and their families during the pandemic. People were forced into nursing homes and isolated from their families, even in their final moments.

Looking ahead, Whitmer's Lt. Governor has announced his intention to replace her in 2026, and the Democrat secretary of state is also running for the nomination. Both of these individuals stood by Whitmer during the COVID crisis, supporting her actions.

As Michigan residents, we must remember the past to avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future. Electing those aligned with Whitmer's failed policies should be immediately dismissed for any future statewide office positions.

As philosopher George Santayana once said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Let's not repeat the mistakes of the past six years (or eight, by the time Whitmer's term ends) by electing those with the same flawed judgment as the current governor. Michigan deserves better.
