In the iconic 1998 film "Ronin," Robert de Niro's character is queried by Sean Bean, "Did you ever kill anybody?" De Niro retorts, "I hurt somebody's feelings once."

While JD Vance, the American conservative author and venture capitalist, didn't physically harm anyone at the Munich Security Conference, his speech certainly ruffled some feathers.

The most visibly affected was Vance's host, Munich Security Conference Chairman Christoph Heusgen. In his concluding remarks, Heusgen was visibly emotional, a display that may be acceptable for European politicians, but it hardly conveys courage, strength, or confidence.

Heusgen lamented, "With aval Ewald von Kleist, this conference started as a transatlantic conference. After the speech of Vice President Vance on Friday, we have to fear that our common value base is not that common anymore. I'm very grateful to all those European politicians that spoke out and reaffirmed the values and principles that they are defending. No one did this better than president Zelensky. Let me conclude and this becomes difficult..."

According to RedState, the emotional display was met with approval by those who saw it as a metaphor for the current state of Europe. However, it's worth noting that back in 2018, Heusgen was among the German politicians who scoffed at President Trump's warnings about the dangers of relying solely on Russian natural gas for energy.

Just as Trump cautioned them about the national security risks, Vance echoed similar sentiments about the cultural decay caused by unchecked immigration by individuals who disdain Europe's culture and openly express their desire to replace it. Vance also warned of the creeping totalitarianism of, as he phrased it, "commissars who view the ordinary people as problems to be managed and not a source of national strength."

Heusgen's emotional response underscores a harsh reality; the common ground that America and Europe have shared since the founding of the United States is wearing thin.

Notably, the British and Germans have chosen to adopt a model of democracy reminiscent of Communist China, where freedom of speech is only as free as the government permits. The spirit of initiative and ambition has been supplanted by a monotonous bureaucracy that lacks brilliance and harbors resentment towards those who possess it.

The Europeans are witnessing the end of the American gravy train. The era of American youth and treasure safeguarding Europe is drawing to a close. The Europeans will now have to shoulder the responsibility for their own defense or acquiesce to the dominance of their Chinese and Russian counterparts.

The Europeans may have laughed at Trump, but they are not laughing at Vance. His words have struck a nerve, revealing the stark reality of the challenges Europe faces. The question now is whether they will heed these warnings or continue down a path that could potentially lead to their cultural and political demise.
